LEARN A LANGUAGE

Gisterenavond is het nog een fijne avond geworden. We zijn met enkele Koreanen een hapje gaan eten in Eersel. Het was zeer gezellig! Koreanen zijn zoals te verwachten niet allemaal hetzelfde. Zo was er één bij die hyperactief was en één die bijna nog te verlegen was om eten te bestellen. Hun namen zijn me wel iets te ingewikkeld. Het grappige is dat ze weten dat we er moeilijkheden mee hebben en dat ze uit zichzelf voor ons hun namen afkorten. Daar maken we dan ook dankbaar gebruik van! En dan nog maar te zwijgen van de taal . Ze probeerden ons smakelijk eten in het Koreaans aan te leren, maar dat is echt niet voor mij weggelegd. Eén van hen kon wel een woordje Nederlands zoals goeiemorgen en smakelijk eten.

Deze morgen, na het lezen van mijn mails, ben ik verdergegaan met het afbakenen van de informatie die we nodig hebben van de klant om het preventief onderhoud te kunnen optimaliseren. Na een paar mailtjes heen en weer te sturen is me dit toch al aardig gelukt.
Ik herinner me nog dat iemand eens tegen me heeft gezegd dat het belangrijker is de juiste personen te kennen dan de materie op zich te kennen. Soms is dit echt wel waar, zeker in dit geval.

Na de middag zijn we een ijsje gaan eten. We hadden deze morgen namelijk een aangenaam mailtje in onze mailbox zitten. ASML presteert zo goed en waardeert onze inspanningen zo erg dat ze een aantal ijskarretjes naar het terrein hebben laten komen om het begin van de zomer te vieren. Deze kans heb ik niet laten liggen en deze middag na de lunch ben ik tijdens onze dagdagelijkse wandeling buiten eventjes langs een ijskarretje gewandeld. Ja, je hebt het juist gelezen, onze dagdagelijkse wandeling. Het is blijkbaar een Nederlandse gewoonte om ’s middags na je lunch eventjes een beetje frisse lucht te gaan scheppen. Ik vind het geen slechte gewoonte moet ik zeggen.

Na het welverdiende ijsje, terug aan het werk. Voor het project Clean Maintenance heb ik alle tools voor WH opgezocht en ben ik begonnen ze één voor één onder de loep te nemen.  Ik onderzoek dan of ze vervuilend zijn en of ze gemakkelijk te reinigen zijn. Hier heb ik mijn werk wel aan en daarna zijn nog de tools van WS (Wafer stage) en C&T (Contamination and temperature control) aan de beurt. Hier zal ik wel een aantal weken mee zoet zijn, denk ik.

Normaal hebben we elke donderdag een teammeeting om zo op de hoogte te blijven wat er zoal speelt in Wafer Handler en Reticle Handler. Maar deze week moet dit wijken voor de departementsmeeting, die een paar keer per jaar gehouden wordt. Hierin worden de problemen, maar ook de prestaties en nieuwe producten naar voor geschoven. Deze keer is er echter een kleine uitzondering. De meeting wordt niet gehouden in onze aula zelf, maar is ergens in Veldhoven omwille van de borrel achteraf. Ik weet niet hoe het komt, maar deze week lijkt alles samen te komen: het etentje, het ijsje en de borrel. Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik klaag niet. Zo, dat was het weer voor vandaag, ik ga eens vertrekken voor de departementsmeeting. Tot morgen, voor een laatste update.

Money for Nothing

NEW YORK CITY has decided to offer cash rewards to some students based on their attendance records and exam performance. Diligent, high-achieving seventh graders will be able to earn up to $500 in a year. The plan is the brainchild of Roland G. Fryer, an economist who has been appointed as “chief equality officer” of the city’s Department of education usa .

The assumption that underlies the project is simple: people respond to incentives. If you want people to do something, you have to make it worth their while. This assumption drives virtually all of economic theory.

Sure, there are already many rewards in learning: gaining understanding (of yourself and others), having mysterious or unfamiliar aspects of the world opened up to you, demonstrating mastery, satisfying curiosity, inhabiting imaginary worlds created by others, and so on. Learning is also the route to more prosaic rewards, like getting into good colleges and getting good jobs. But these rewards are not doing the job. If they were, children would be doing better in school.

The logic of the plan reveals a second assumption that economists make: the more motives the better. Give people two reasons to do something, the thinking goes, and they will be more likely to do it, and they’ll do it better, than if they have only one. Providing some cash won’t disturb the other rewards of learning, rewards that are intrinsic to the process itself. They will only provide a little boost. Mr. Fryer’s reward scheme is intended to add incentives to the ones that already exist.

Unfortunately, these assumptions that economists make about human motivation, though intuitive and straightforward, are false. In particular, the idea that adding motives always helps is false. There are circumstances in which adding an incentive competes with other motives and diminishes their impact. Psychologists have known this for more than 30 years.
